ODAE 2026: Faculty of Engineering Researchers Bring International Scientific Community Together in Mallorca

Between 31 August and 2 September 2026, ODAE – Open Dialog in Applied Engineering 2026 brought together researchers and professionals from different scientific fields for an international meeting focused on research, knowledge exchange and collaboration. The event took place in Alcúdia, Mallorca, bringing together participants involved in several European research initiatives.

The conference was organised by Andriy Lyubchyk, Svitlana Lyubchyk and Sergiy Lyubchyk, researchers from RCM2+ / Deep Tech Lab, Faculty of Engineering, Universidade Lusófona.

ODAE 2026 brought together activities from five research projects: EWALD (101086250) and INNMEDSCAN (101086178), which held their project conferences, as well as scientific workshops and sessions associated with DETMED (101129879), E-NOSE (101182748) and H-SAFE (101232577). All five projects are funded under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Staff Exchange programme. Their presence at the same event created opportunities to connect research communities working across diverse areas, from engineering, physics and nanomaterials to environmental sciences, green chemistry and medical technologies.

One of the highlights of the programme was the EWALD Project Conference, taking place as the project moves towards its final stage in November 2026. Coordinated by Universidade Lusófona, EWALD is developing an innovative approach to an Early Warning System (EWS) for land degradation affecting the European Union from its external borders. The project combines multi-source and multi-scale Earth Observation (EO) data to support the development of improved monitoring and response approaches. The conference offered an opportunity for the project partners to share research progress, discuss results and reflect on the work developed throughout the project.

The scientific programme was complemented by moments of interaction outside the formal sessions. Informal discussions during breaks, meals and conference dinners allowed participants to exchange ideas in a more relaxed environment and establish new connections across countries and research fields. Such interactions are particularly relevant within the MSCA Staff Exchange framework, which promotes international mobility, knowledge transfer and collaboration between researchers and organisations.

The successful organisation of ODAE 2026 by researchers from RCM2+ / Deep Tech Lab and the Faculty of Engineering at Universidade Lusófona also highlights the Faculty's contribution to creating and supporting international research networks. By hosting a meeting that connected several MSCA Staff Exchange projects, the organisers helped strengthen the links between research teams and create a setting for future scientific cooperation.
